The CBD skincare industry is on the fast-track to being one of the biggest industries. After the massive legalization of marijuana for health and recreational purposes, you can find this popular compound in everything from chocolates, cocktails, candles to even clothing. CBD is everywhere and in everything you can possibly think of CBD oil is useful for skin.

Amongst the users of CBD products, 36% confirm that the product works well in healing a variety of health conditions. What a lot of people don’t know is that CBD oil can work well on your skin the same way it is useful when it’s ingested. One of the essential reasons why several people are embracing this product is because CBD oil is useful for skin in its ability to fight breakouts and inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory properties explain why it is now standard in most skin products for healing conditions such as eczema and Psoriasis.

And now the buzzy ingredient is taking over the world of beauty and skin care. From serums and sunscreens to chapsticks, creams and cleansers, there is an array of hemp-infused products popping up in beauty supply stores everywhere. CBD oil is also a powerful antioxidant and can help fasten healing time as well. So it’s safe to say that the CBD trend isn’t going to die down anytime soon.

So, what does CBD do for your skin? Let’s look at some CBD oil is useful for skin benefits that you can enjoy by simply adding CBD products to your daily skin care routine.

What is CBD and how is it good for my skin?

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a naturally-occurring chemical compound found in cannabis plants, namely marijuana and hemp. It is one of the two primary active ingredients of cannabis, the other one being tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC. Unlike THC, pure CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, which means that it does not make you feel ‘high’

According to some research, CBD may be effective in alleviating anxiety, chronic inflammation and pain, insomnia and some rare forms of childhood epilepsy. Moreover, a long-term study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that CBD may help prevent cognitive decline. In addition, according to a review published in the Neurotherapeutics journal, CBD may also be effective in treating substance use disorder.

Known for its healing properties, Ildi Pekar, an NYC-based aesthetician and founder of her own skin care line said, “Cannabidiol offers some serious antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits which can be helpful in treating skin concerns like inflammation, dryness and free radical damage.” It might also be effective in fighting acne, as it helps reduce the production of sebum in the skin. Some studies also indicate that cannabidiol may be effective in treating eczema and psoriasis as well.

While the research on CBD’s benefits is fairly limited, it’s generally safe to use topically. Dr. Adarsh Mudgil, a double-board certified dermatologist and founder of Mudgil Dermatology says, “There is likely no harm in continuing to use a CBD-infused product you like. If you happen to have a reaction from a CBD topical product, it’s likely not from the CBD itself, but some other ingredient like a botanical”, he explains.

CBD oil for wrinkles and anti-aging

Because it is derived from a plant, it is not surprising that CBD oil also has antioxidant properties. The antioxidants in CBD help lessen the visible signs of aging. By counteracting free-radical damage and reducing visible inflammation, CBD anti-aging creams help diminish issues like wrinkles, skin dullness, and ruddy skin tone.

CBD oil for sensitive skin

Another great benefit of CBD oil is that it has been found to have significant soothing properties. Its substantial skin-calming and skin-normalizing effects can help minimize issues related to skin sensitivity, including redness and reactivity. Since all skin types are affected daily by environmental stressors, CBD’s soothing mechanism can help keep everyone’s skin in check.

How do I choose the right CBD skincare product?

All cannabidiol-infused products are formulated using full-spectrum CBD oil, broad-spectrum CBD oil or CBD isolate. Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all the compounds found in hemp, including trace amounts of THC. Broad-spectrum CBD oil, on the other hand, contains a range of cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes derived from hemp, but no THC.

CBD isolate is the purest version of CBD. It doesn’t contain any other compounds that you find in a hemp plant,” says Pekar. “This form of CBD oil is best for facial skin as it is pure, doesn’t clog pores and is packed with skin-rejuvenating antioxidants,” adds the aesthetician. Look for products that mention ‘cannabidiol’, ‘hemp extract’, ‘broad-spectrum CBD’, full-spectrum CBD’ or ‘hemp CBD’ on the label. Also, note that hemp seed oil or cannabis Sativa seed oil isn’t the same thing as CBD oil. Pekar explains, “CBD oil is extracted from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant. It is finer and lighter as compared to hemp seed oil, which tends to be greasier.

Another essential step is to determine the amount of CBD in a product. “For instance, if you’re looking for lotions and oils for pain relief or anxiety, the CBD percentage needs to be higher in order to be effective”, concludes Pekar.

The most important factor to consider, however, is the quality of the product you are purchasing. According to a 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, over 60% of online CBD products are mislabeled.  So make sure you trust the brand and have confidence that the products will be safe and that they contain exactly what the label claims it contains. It is always best to opt for products that have been tested in a third-party lab.
